TURKEY ANKARA TRAVEL GUIDE

Ankara is Turkey’s capital and the second largest city after Istanbul. Located in the center of Anatolia on the eastern edge of the great, high Anatolian Plateau, in the province of the same name, Ankara is a lovely tourist destination. Besides its cultural and architectural heritage, the city has a major European appearance than most of the other cities in Turkey, with wide-open roads, large hotels, restaurants and museums…

This city genuinely lies on the border where East meets West. In Ankara this means that a traveller can sit outside a café under the shade of a tree-lined boulevard eating Meze. The combined influences of Europe and the Middle East on this city have coloured the architecture, food, wine, nightlife, fashion and arts. The two cultures have merged to produce a city with a unique identity. By dropping anchor in Ankara, as its name suggests, you are crossing the border of history.

kocatepe mosqueAnkara is not only in the centre of Turkey, it is also the centre for the country’s artistic talent. The National Opera, National, Ballet, National Theatre and the Presidential Symphony Orchestra are based here. But there is just as much talent outdoors on the streets. 60% of the city’s population is under 30 years old. The energy and drive that comes with youth means that Ankara is now experiencing a mini-cultural revolution. The city was designed with Europe in mind, and the Middle East in spirit. Its structure is like a modern European city with parks and wide boulevards. It still looks the same, but it sounds, smells and bustles like a Middle East city. To visit ancient Ankara head to
Ulus, narrow and winding streets are filled with stalls and shops selling antiques and Kilims. To taste Ankara today head to the fashionable city centre, Kizilay, for a mix of
modern food and clothing. Ankara gave us Angora wool and the secular politics of Ataturk. Today it will give you a taste of two worlds rolled into one.
