Ankarans save the best for last: the
evening meal. It usually starts with a
meze, many small dishes served at the
same time. Followed by Ishkembe (tripe
soup) and Iskender (spit-cooked sliced
lamb). Desserts are extra sweety: baklava,
kadayif and muhallebi). Kahve is a small,
but strong coffee. Raki, an
aniseed-flavoured clear grape brandy,
similar to the Greek ouzo, is drunk with
evening meals.
Washington Restaurant
Near the Citadel in a 400 year old building.
An institution, and a “must-eat”.
Politicians, journalists and celebrities hang
out here. Borsch is strongly recommended.
Halep style meatballs, sis (meat on a
skewer) with yogurt and mixed grills are
favourites.

of the Citadal with views of the city. Very
romantic in the garden on a warm evening.
