Eating in Gothenburg

Fish is recommended in Göteborg. The raw materials are excellent whether you choose a prawn sandwich in a café, a magnificent view at Heaven 23 or perfectly cooked halibut at Fond. There are two main streets– the gourmet restaurants around the Avenue and along the river, and the small restaurants in the Linné district for those who like to explore different national cuisines. Right in the middle is Viktoriagatan with Kock & Vin and Klara for those who want to be close to the night life.
Klara
With an ever changing menu Klara invites you to sample different cuisines of the world. During the day the restaurant hosts a café and in the evening you will be met by either a Lebanese, Italian or Caribbean menu, or perhaps something completely different...

S.p.i.c.e Of Thailand
The restaurant offers a Thai menu with
well composed dishes and a genuine
feeling for Thai cuisine. The location is
central and only a stone’s throw away from Saluhallen.

28+
The name stands for the ideal serving
temperature for cheese and provides a hint as to the restaurant’s speciality, which is also sold in the shop at the same address. Diners also come here for the fine wines and sage-roasted breast of guinea fowl with grilled duck’s liver, asparagus and honey sauce.

Hos Pelle
Make a detour on the way to the charming Linnégatan area to visit Hos Pelle which blends modern cooking with simple home cooking. The bar menu is cheaper, but maintains an equally high quality, and the fish soup is highly recommended.

Café Japan
They are enthusiastic about Japanese food here, and it is an excellent option for the budget conscious. Sushi for those who are a bit more adventurous. Simple, but well-cooked. A lively bar in the evening with Northern Soul and jazz. A small menu from 165 kronor.

Thörnströms Kök
From the outside it would be easy to
believe that it is a local restaurant, but the inside reveals a completely different
picture. Prepare yourself for a full,
inspiring and enjoyable evening in the
company of, for example, witch lounder
and grilled Norway lobster. The tasting
menu is an alternative route to heaven.

CAFÉS
The word café feels as much part of
Göteborg’s vocabulary as it does the
French. ‘Fika’ - having a cup of tea or
coffee – has long roots in Göteborg. As
early as 1890 artists were sitting in one of
Göteborg’s main cafés - Junggrens on the
Avenue – an establishment which has
brought the café trend into the 21st
century.
Excellent places for breakfast are Le petit
café in Haga or Kafé Publik on Andra
Långgatan. More traditional cafés, such as Rosenkaféet in Trädgårdsföreningen,
where cakes and sandwiches are served,
also have a strong foothold.
Mauritz Kaffe
Coffee has been roasted and ground here
since 1888 and is then served directly to standing customers. There’s not a very big selection, but home made rye bread or apple cinnamon buns are irresistible with a cup of old java while you people-watch or look at the current exhibition.

Bar Centro
Hip café with seating in window bays on
the outside if it is full inside. A constant
stream of people and a familiar atmosphere.

Bonus Box/after Work Buffet
Who started the trend? Everyone wants to take the credit for the after work buffet. A number of pubs usually have Fridays as their ”after work” day, between 17.00 and 19.00. A smörgåsbord of salads, noodles,
tacos or pasta is served – all depending on culinary emphasis. It can take time to find the best buffets. Come early before the dishes are empty.
