The palace Square also has received the name from the Winter palace. Peter and Paul Fortress Saint-PetersburgThe Peter and Paul Fortress, Saint-Petersburg, Russia
The Peter and Paul Fortress was founded by Peter the Great on a small island in the Neva delta on May 27, 1703 (May 16 according to the old calendar), which is now marked as St. Petersburg's City Day. From 1721, the fortress housed part of the city's garrison and also famously served as a high security political jail - among the first inmates was Peter's own rebellious son Alexei.
Nowadays on the territory of the fortress several interesting museums are functioning. At the Commandant's House visitors can get acquainted with the history of Saint Petersburg since 1703 till 1917. In the Trubetzkoy bastion one can learn a lot of interesting facts about the main political prison of Russia. The gas-dynamic laboratory and the printing house are also worth visiting. Yusupov Palace, which is located on quay of the river of the Moika, is one of the most beautiful monuments of classicism in St.-Petersburg. In decoration of halls of a palace have been used motives of various historical styles. For example, the home theatre are issued in spirit of a baroque, the Turkish cabinet - in east style, main halls - in style an empire style, a part of halls of a ground floor have been decorated in style of neoclassicism. The furniture of halls amazes with the magnificence: painting, screw-thread, a marble, the mirrors, dear silks, graceful furniture. Yusupov's family have collected in a palace a rich collection of painting, a sculpture and subjects of an art. Partially these assemblies are presented to expositions of a museum.

PetrodvoretsPetergofSaint-PetersburgPetrodvorets, Petergof, Saint-Petersburg, Russia

Petrodvorets is situated on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland, 29 km from Saint Petersburg. Its parks occupy a territory of about 1000 ha. In 1714 on a high littoral terrace a palace was founded (known as upper halls) and behind the palace the Upper Garden was laid out.
There is a unique system of water-supply of the fountains which is based on the principle of communicating vessels. The fountains are connected by means of a water-main with springs welling out in the Ropshinsky Heights. It was also the time when the park later named as Lower was established there. In the middle of the XVIII century the palace was augmented upon the project of the architect Rastrelli.
