Okavango Nxabega

Nxabega is a private concession area to the south of the Okavango Delta.

This is one of the wetter parts of the delta, with about a third each of permanent flood, seasonal flood and dry land.

The lodges in the southeast of the area are located on quite small islands. Game-viewing can be a bit hit and miss, so these camps should be considered primary for wet safari. Our favourite is the Kanana Mokoro Trail, an adventurous two night exploration trip.

The only major dry area is around the upmarket Nxabega Camp, which can be considered a mixed wet and dry camp year round.

Kanana Camp (MORE PICTURES..)

Kanana is a pleasant, refreshingly unpolished mid-range lodge, located on the Nxabega Concession to the south of Okavango.

June to October this is primarily a wet camp, offering excellent mokoro and motorboat safari, but limited dry game-viewing. At this time we tend to avoid it except in safaris which include 3 or more camps, for fear of a shortage of animal action.

November to May when water levels are generally low, Kanana is one of only a handful of camps to offer a good range of wet and dry safari and therefore suitable in any camp combination.

Kanana Mokoro Trail (MORE PICTURES..)

Kanana Mokoro Trail is located in the excellent Nxabega Concession to the south of the Okavango Delta.

Extending over three days, the trail explores the waterways and islands by canoe and foot, staying at a tiny remote camp deep in the delta.

Along with the similar but more pricey Xigera Mokoro Trail, this is basically an upmarket version of the original Okavango experience, retaining the sense of adventure but upgrading the quality of both location and service. If you are up for a bit of camping then this is surely the best water-based safari in Botswana.

Nxabega Camp

Nxabega (Nah-beh-kah) Camp is located in an very good wet and dry location to the south of the Okavango Delta.

This is an upmarket camp in a pretty location on the forested banks of a small lagoon.

There are quite a few good wet and dry camps in the delta and choosing between them can be quite tough.

Nxabega is at the 'safari chic' end of the range, an elegantly hosted lodge for guests who like to retain a high level of comfort in a designer environment.

Pom Pom Camp (MORE PICTURES..)

Pom Pom is located in the Nxabega Concession to the south of the Okavango Delta. June to October this is primarily a wet camp, with increasingly more dry safari November to May as the waters recede.

Pom Pom is a rare thing in this area ... a relatively low cost camp in a high quality private concession.

Ultimately we tend to use this camp relatively rarely, resisting the temptation to shave the cost of a safari in favour of including a higher rated camp instead. But Pom Pom remains a pretty decent option when the better camps are fully booked
