Okavango Moremi Central

The heart of the Okavango is dominated by a large central landmass known as Chief's Island, surrounded by water on all sides during the flood season. This is a prime area for game in Okavango, especially around the northeastern tip, which is unusually reliable for lion and leopard in particular.

The major downside is that being part of the national park, nightdrives and walking safari are not generally permitted, which means that the safari experience on offer here is a lot less varied than in the surrounding concession areas.

Mombo is one of the most famous and expensive camps in Africa, Xigera Camp is probably the prettiest water camp in the delta, whilst Xigera Mokoro Trail offers a really cool adventure camping experience.

Chiefs Camp

This lodge is located on Chief's Island, in the Moremi National Park, the heart of the Okavango delta.

Given the location one might expect this lodge to command the same level of cudos as nearby Mombo, but in reality Chief's Camp falls considerably short, both in terms of the lodge and safari experience.

We would think to use Chief's Camp for guests who place lodge luxury above safari experience and then only when we are unable to get availablility in any of the higher rated top-end lodges.

Mombo is undeniably the flagship camp for Botswana. Located on the northwest tip of Chief's Island in the Moremi National Park, this is the epicentre of Okavango delta.

Little Mombo is a three room annexe to the main Mombo Camp. It too offers genuine super-luxury and also continues to attract a really good mix of safari-oriented guests.

The biggest problems in putting together a safari in Botswana are usually high price and lack of availability ... and Mombo does both in spades, so best to plan years ahead.

Mombo Camp

Xigera Camp PICTURES..

Xigera (Ki-jrr-ah) is an extremely beautiful, largely flooded area in the southwest corner of Moremi National Park at the heart of the Okavango.

Xigera Camp is an extremely pretty lodge, offering probably the best mokoro and motorboat safaris year round.

But whilst the water-based safari is lovely, it does not typically provide good game-viewing.

We therefore only tend to include a pure wet camp in safaris which include four or more lodge stops in the Okavango and Linyanti areas and then only for two nights.

Xigera Mokoro Trail

Xigera Mokoro Trail is a camping safari which extends over three days, exploring by canoe and on foot the waterways and islands of this beautiful area in the heart of the Okavango, staying at a tiny remote camp deep in the delta.

Along with the similar Kanana Mokoro Trail, this is basically an upmarket version of the original Okavango experience, retaining the sense of adventure but upgrading the quality of both location and service.

If you are outdoorsy and up for a bit of camping then this is surely the best water-based safari in Botswana.
