Okavango Mopane

Moremi National Park covers a large part of the central and northeast Okavango Delta. The area of dry land which juts out from the eastern side is known as the Mopane Tongue.

Much of the land here is covered with dry woodland, but around the waterfronts there are floodplains, open grasslands and stands of cathedral mopane forest. It is a very pretty area, rich in wildlife.

The problem is that the Mopane Tongue is accessable to self-drive vehicles and therefore sees really excessive traffic volumes, especially during the main holiday seasons.

This traffic issue alone makes this a very second rate area when compared with the private concessions and we therefore do not use it in any of our safaris.

Camp Moremi

Camp Moremi is located in the busy public access section of Moremi National Park in the Okavango Delta. This is the northern of the three adjacent lodges on the tip of the Mopane Tongue.

The camp itself is rather too large and has a style of build and manicured gardens which make it feel rather dated.

We do not generally include this busy area in our safaris and so only make bookings at this lodge exceedingly rarely.

Camp Okuti

Camp Okuti is located in the busy public access section of Moremi National Park in the Okavango Delta. This is the northern of the three adjacent lodges on the tip of the Mopane Tongue.

The camp itself is pleasant, with a nice view out over the water.

We do not generally include this busy area in our safaris and so only make bookings at this lodge exceedingly rarely.

North Gate Campsite

North Gate Campsite is located in the northeast corner of Moremi National Park, where the upper road out to the Mopane Tongue hits the main Maun to Chobe road.

This is an extremely busy location, crawling with overlanders, especially during the South African school holidays.

We do not include this whole area in our safaris due to the traffic levels.

South Gate Campsite

South Gate Campsite is located in the southeast corner of Moremi National Park, where the lower road out to the Mopane Tongue hits the main Maun to Chobe road.

This is an extremely busy location, crawling with overlanders, especially during the South African school holidays.

We do not include this whole area in our safaris due to the traffic levels.

Xakanaxa Camp

Xakanaxa (ka-ka-na-ka) Camp is located in the busy public access section of Moremi National Park in the Okavango Delta. This is the middle of the three adjacent lodges on the tip of the Mopane Tongue.

The camp itself is surprisingly nice given its location, easily as good a build as many of the private concession camps.

We do not generally include this busy area in our safaris and so only make bookings at this lodge exceedingly rarely.
