Okavango Jao Flats, Jao Camp, Jacana Camp, Kwetsani Camp, Tubu Tree Camp

Jao Flats is one of the premium Okavango concessions.

Being located near to the Panhandle, this area has a very early and reliable flood. Mid May to end June this is arguably the best location in the delta.

Throughout the year there remains a good mix of wet and dry safari in all camps, although by October the lack of deepwater channels can start to restrict motorboat and even mokoro safari.

Of the four camps, we generally prefer Tubu Tree and Kwetsani, smaller camps offering a good range of wet and dry safari. Jacana is also small but can be a bit too wet May to October, whilst the super-luxury Jao Camp is really not our cup of tea at all

Jacana Camp

Jacana is a pleasantly small and simple camp on the excellent Jao Concession in the western Okavango Delta.

May to October this is primarily a wet camp, offering excellent mokoro and motorboat safari, but limited dry game-viewing. At this time we tend to avoid it except in safaris which include 3 or more camps, for fear of a shortage of animal action.

November to April when water levels are generally low, Jacana is one of only a handful of camps to offer a good range of wet and dry safari and therefore suitable in any camp combination.

Jao Camp

Jao Camp is the flagship camp in this excellent Jao Concession, a prime Okavango area.

This is a super-luxury lodge, with sumptuous public areas and enormous guest bedrooms.

Overall Jao Camp seems to be more focussed on the quality of its decor, hosting and food service than on the core bush experience.

We therefore tend to use the lodge for guests who are more interested in having a restful time in around the lodge rather than spending all day chasing around after animals.

Kwetsani Camp

Kwetsani is a truly beautiful little camp on the excellent Jao Concession in the western Okavango Delta.

May to September the camp offers a superb mix of wet and dry safari.

October to April the water levels are much lower and the camp concentrates mainly on dry safari, which means that a wetter camp will also be required in most trips.

We enjoy the more relaxed hosting here, but do find that the guides sometimes need some encouragement, especially to undertake proper night safaris.

Tubu Tree Camp

Tubu is a lovely little camp on the excellent Jao Concession in the western Okavango Delta.

May to August the camp offers an excellent mix of wet and dry safari.

September to April the water levels are much lower and the camp concentrates mainly on dry safari, which means that a wetter camp will also be required in most trips.

Of the four camps on this concession Tubu Tree is the most focussed on the safari side of the experience, which makes it the first choice for most of our guests.
