In Klagenfurt, neat and tidy Austria meets Italian flair, and it’s an attractive combination. Enticing little shops line the narrow passageways that link stylish squares. Just meandering around the old town’s little streets turns up all kinds of discoveries. Design and presentation are important here. An understated elegance is revealed in window displays and permeates the goods on sale, from designer fashion to smart crafts.

Klagenfurt boasts the oldest pedestrian zone in Austria – shop-filled Kramergasse. In Lemisch Platz, the colourfully painted façades of the old buildings, and some stylish Art Nouveau twirls, are as eye-catching as the shop windows below. Look for traditional Austrian costumes, attractive glass, art, jewellery and the full range of good Austrian gifts at Karntner Heimatwerk on Herrengasse. If you fancy an Alpine-style tweed hat, you’ll find one at Orasch on Alter Platz; alongside high-street staples like Marionnaud perfumes, H& ;M fashion, multi-media stores and bookshops. On the St Veiter Ring, City Arkaden is a new shopping mall, with over 120 outlets from fashion to food. Mango and Pimkie are there. Images of the Lindwurm, Klagenfurt’s dragon emblem, come in all forms, from biscuits in bakeries to candles in crafts’ shops. They make fun gifts and souvenirs. At the lively morning market on Benediktinerplatz, under the watchful gaze of the church tower; stalls are piled high with locally grown fruit and vegetables, farm cheeses, honey, fresh meat and delicatessen products. Thursday and Saturday, which are also the best “farmers’ market” days, have a wonderful selection of flowers. The Pfau Distillery on Shleppeplatz is the place to buy pure fruit schnapps, and to see how it’s made. There’s also a good wine cellar for tasting and buying a fine selection of wines.
